If you were to take inventory of your bathroom, you would probably be surprised by all of the products you use. The EWG estimates that the average adult uses 12 body products a day, while teen girls use 17 personal care products. Most conventional personal care products contain harmful ingredients.
Our exposure to harmful chemicals is compounded due to the sheer number of products that we use daily. Let’s take one example: If you use 12 skincare products that contain fragrance, you could potentially be exposing yourself to over a thousand harmful chemicals.
The word “fragrance” is often considered a trade secret, allowing manufacturers to combine dozens to hundreds of chemicals under one ingredient name without listing each one. This is why the number of chemicals in a single fragrance product can vary widely, and consumers aren’t typically given details.
Fragrance can contain multiple endocrine disrupting chemicals in one formulation, with phthalates being one of the most common endocrine disrupting chemicals in fragrance.
Endocrine disruptors either mimic, alter, or change the normal hormone levels in the body. Some of the health issues associated with endocrine disruption include: Reproductive abnormalities, Increased risk of developing cancer, Obesity, Attention and Behavioral problems in children, Asthma, Reproductive/Fertility problems, Diabetes, Autoimmune disorders.
Research by Dairkee et al. has found a potential link between ingredients commonly found in personal care products and cancer-related changes within healthy human breast cells. Continuous exposure to chemicals such as parabens and phthalates can lead to persistent disruptions in gene activity and normal cellular function, potentially increasing the risk of breast cancer in some individuals. These chemicals are known to mimic natural estrogen, likely interfering with the delicate balance of female sex hormone signals in the body. Regular exposure may raise an individual’s likelihood of developing breast cancer.
A recent research study has noted that girls are reaching puberty at a younger age, and they have identified an endocrine-disrupting chemical (musk ambrette, an ingredient that can be found in fragrance) that impacts a region of the brain responsible for initiating hormone production. Early puberty may be associated with increased risk of psychosocial problems, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hormone-related cancers.
From both of these studies, the takeaway is that exposure to harmful chemicals can have serious impacts on our heath. We can reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals by swapping out products that contain endocrine disruptors and other toxic ingredients for alternative products that don’t contain toxic ingredients.
As an example of what harmful ingredients can be found in conventional personal care products, I looked through the ingredient list on a bottle of Bath & Body Works Pink Cashmere lotion and found some concerning ingredients on the label: fragrance, methylparaben, propylparaben, BHT and diazolindinyl urea (a formaldehyde releaser).
Today there are many brands that offer personal care products without harmful chemicals, and they perform just as well if not better than their conventional counterparts. So why not use products that don’t contain harmful ingredients?
All of the non-toxic personal care products below are items you may use regularly in your bathroom. They are free from harmful chemicals like parabens, phthalates, BHT, fragrance, EDTA, Talc, PEG, Phenoxyethanol, Polysorbate and chemical sunscreen ingredients (Avobenzene, Octisalate, Octocrylene).

Personal Care Products
Many conventional skincare products contain harsh chemicals like parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances. Dental Care Products
Several studies have found that prenatal exposure to fluoride is associated with a negative impact on IQ levels and cognitive outcomes. The National Toxicology Program has concluded that increased fluoride exposure is associated with lower IQ in kids. A safer fluoride alternative is hydroxyapatite- it’s the main substance in your teeth, making up 97% of enamel. Hydroxyapatite has been used in Japan for over 40 years.
