If you’re trying to rid your kitchen of plastic, using plastic-free food storage containers is a great place to start. By ditching plastic food storage, you’re one step closer to reducing the toxins in your home. There are many non-reactive, non-toxic materials that work well for food storage, including glass, high quality stainless steel, silicone and ceramic.
I’ve been using glass food storage for years, but one detail I managed to overlook was the plastic lids. Plastic lids can come into contact with food, and they also get carelessly tossed in the dishwasher, where the high heat causes them to leach harmful chemicals. like Bisphenols (including BPA and BPS).
What’s the concern with plastic food containers and plastic lids?
Plasticizers like Bisphenol (BPA, BPS and BPF) are synthetic chemical compounds found in plastic food storage containers and lids.
Bisphenols are endocrine disruptors, and can have adverse effects on male and female infertility, puberty, and can potentially play a role in hormone dependent tumors (breast and prostate), among other health issues. According to a 2020 study, BPS can have the same harmful properties as BPA.
It really bothered me that when I stuffed a glass food storage container full of leftovers, the top of the food touched the plastic lid. Plastic lids can leach plasticizers into food just as readily as a plastic container can.
A plastic lid may have a “dishwasher safe” stamp of approval, but that simply means the plastic lids won’t melt in the dishwasher when exposed to high heat. If you’re putting the plastic lids in the dishwasher, they will heat up enough to leach harmful chemicals.
That’s why I set out to find non-toxic food storage containers with plastic-free lids. Food grade, high quality silicone with no fillers can safely be cleaned in the dishwasher. Wooden lids are a safer option than plastic, although they can’t go in the dishwasher.
