Air fryer recipes have been inundating the internet and social media for a while now. Why would someone want an air fryer? For starters, they give food a crispy texture that’s similar to deep frying but with little to no oil, making it a healthier option. Air fryers also tend to cook food faster than a conventional oven and are a convenient countertop appliance.
Non-toxic air fryers are designed with safe, chemical-free materials like stainless steel, glass or ceramic coatings, avoiding harmful substances such as Teflon and BPA. They offer a healthier way to enjoy crispy, oil-free cooking without exposing food to toxic fumes or unwanted contaminants. Beyond air fryers, all kitchen appliances, cookware and bakeware should be free of PFAS chemicals, since there are so many adverse health issues associated with chronic exposure.
What’s So Bad About Non-Stick Appliances?
The problem with non-stick appliances is the material used to create the non-stick surface. Non-stick coatings like Teflon contain per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS chemicals.
PFAS is short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Chemicals in this class of substances are found in products like nonstick pans (e.g. “Teflon”), food packaging, waterproof jackets, and carpets to repel water, grease, and stains.
PFAS don’t easily break down, and they can persist in your body and in the environment for decades, hence the nickname “forever chemicals”. As a result of their pervasiveness, more than 95 percent of the U.S. population has PFAS in their bodies, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
At high heat (500°F), the non-stick coating releases fumes that are potentially harmful to your health. PFAS has even been linked to certain types of cancer.
Have you heard the term “canary in a coalmine”? In this case, it’s “canary in the kitchen”. Hundreds of pet bird deaths have been blamed on toxic emissions from non-stick cookware.
California Proposition 65 Warning Label
You may see the California Proposition 65 warning label on some, if not most, small kitchen appliances. There are currently over 900 chemicals on this list, including some phthalates and formaldehyde.
Most electrical cords will prompt this warning, and it is an issue related to the inside of the cord that is not exposed. You can call or email a specific company if you have questions about a Prop 65 warning on their product for peace of mind.
Materials That I Look For In Air Fryers
- Stainless Steel– Stainless steel is one of my top choices as an interior material for an air fryer. Stainless steel does not leach harmful chemicals, and it retains heat well and distributes it evenly, which can lead to better cooking performance and crispier food. I love how durable stainless steel is too.
- Glass– Glass is also one of my top choices as an internal material for an air fryer. Glass doesn’t leach harmful chemicals and cleans very easily. It is prone to breakage if you’re not careful.
- Ceramic coated non-stick– Ceramic-coated non-stick air fryers are PFAS-free (from a reputable company like Our Place). Ceramic-coated non-stick is easier to wipe clean if that is a big issue for you. Ceramic coatings aren’t the most durable material overall.
By using safer materials like stainless steel, glass or ceramic, you can enjoy crispy, delicious meals with peace of mind, knowing your health isn’t at risk.
How to Lessen Toxic Exposure When Using An Air Fryer
- Avoid air fryers with non-stick coatings that use PFAS chemicals in their coating.
- Choose Healthier Oils. Use Oils with High Smoke Points: Avoid oils that degrade and produce toxic compounds at high temperatures (like extra virgin olive oil). Instead, use:
Avocado oil (~520°F smoke point)
Refined coconut oil (~450°F)
Ghee or clarified butter (~485°F) - Regular Cleaning & Maintenance- clean after every use, as leftover grease and food particles can create harmful fumes when reheated.
Air Fryers That I Wouldn’t Buy
Breville– The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer does contain a non-stick coating. Although the coating is PFOA free, it has a proprietary non-stick coating (there are thousands of other PFAS chemicals that could be in the coating). I called customer service and they confirmed that there is a non-stick coating and could not give me any more details.
Cuisinart– The first email to Cuisinart never got answered, and in the second email they stated that “The exact nature of the coating is proprietary”.
Aroma– Although Aroma does make a glass air fryer, I called customer service to ask about the round stand that the food is placed on as it cooks. Customer service confirmed that this piece is Teflon-coated. You could swap out the Teflon-coated rack and use this stainless steel one instead.
Non-Toxic & PFAS-Free Air Fryers
I contacted customer service for every air fryer listed below and asked whether the appliances in question contained PFAS chemicals or were coated in PFAS. None of the air fryers below contain any PFAS chemicals per the customer service responses.
