Where we live in Colorado, camping is a right of passage. If you’ve ever camped before, you know there’s a lot of gear involved in camping. Sleeping bags, tents and sleeping pads are just a few of the camp-related items we bring on a camping trip.
On my journey to a more non-toxic lifestyle, I started to look more closely at outdoor ski jackets and the ubiquitous PFAS coatings used to waterproof ski gear. I quickly learned that ski gear isn’t the only outdoor product that utilizes PFAS coatings to repel water. Camping gear, including sleeping bags, are still regularly coated in PFAS chemicals to act as a barrier to moisture.
If you’re camping with kids, it’s more important than ever to avoid harmful chemicals that may be lurking in your outdoor camping gear. Because kids are developing and growing so rapidly, their little bodies are especially vulnerable to toxic chemical exposure. Preventing exposure to toxic chemicals now will help to intercept any health issues your children might face in the future.
Using non-toxic camping gear will give you peace of mind that your family won’t be exposed to harmful chemicals in their sleeping bags, tent, sleeping pads, camp chairs, and camping accessories.
What Are PFAS Chemicals?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of human-made chemicals that have been used in various industrial applications and consumer products since the 1940s. They are commonly referred to as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily in the environment or the human body, leading to their persistence over time. These “forever chemicals” are linked to adverse health issues like testicular and kidney cancer, thyroid disease, obesity, weakened immunity and other health problems.
What Is DWR?
DWR stands for “Durable Water Repellent”, and this membrane does just what it promises – it makes fabric impermeable to water and has the added benefit of keeping it breathable. You will see this term often when looking for waterproof or water-resistant outerwear.
Do all DWR materials contain PFAS? Most of them do, but not all. Look for PFC-Free DWR. PFC stands for Perfluorinated chemicals, and in outdoor industry lingo, it’s the same group of fluorinated chemicals as PFAS (the EPA is currently using the term PFAS in place of PFC).
Don’t be fooled by the terms PFOA-free and PFOS-free. These refer to 2 specific long-chain PFAS chemicals that have been phased out. A company that uses these claims may be greenwashing you and using alternative PFAS chemicals to coat their fabric.
Some outdoor companies are now recognizing the paradoxical nature of using PFAS chemicals in their products – the outdoor clothing they make is intended for going out and enjoying the outdoors, yet the chemicals used on the clothing are destroying the environment and causing health issues. PFAS chemicals have even been detected on the top of Mount Everest – picture a long line of mountain climbers wearing waterproof clothing and sleeping in waterproof tents. The PFAS chemicals shed off onto the snow, and this contaminated snow serves as drinking water for the climbers as well as thousands of people downstream.
Are Outdoor Companies Phasing Out PFAS?
The good news is that many outdoor gear companies are phasing out PFAS, and some have completely switched to PFC-free DWR. Some companies have made goals to be PFAS-free by a certain time-period and have not met those goals yet, so I like to look at the material of each product individually.
What About Flame Retardants?
When it comes to camping, there are a lot of open flames like campfires, stoves and lanterns.
CPAI-84 is a tent flammability standard that was created in 1976 to limit the risk of fire in large paraffin-coated canvas tents, like those used to host a circus. Manufacturers added flame retardants to meet flammability standards, but those came with health risks like hormone disruption, neurological damage, and cancer.
More recently, a new, modernized standard, ASTM F3431, has been approved for testing methods on smaller tents intended for 10 or fewer occupants.
Due to the low incidence of tent fires and the lightweight synthetic outdoor fabrics that inherently have a low flammability risk, flame retardants are oftentimes not required under the new standards. With this in mind, I still double-checked with each of the outdoor companies that I recommend below to make sure they are not using flame retardants on their camping gear.
Are Bluesign Approved partners PFAs-free and Flame Retardant Free?
Bluesign approved products have been manufactured to strict safety and environmental requirements, which are the highest standards in the textile industry.
From the Bluesign Guidelines: “By January 2025 all bluesign® APPROVED articles that were treated with PFAS containing chemicals will be removed from the bluesign® GUIDE”.
From the Bluesign Guidelines: “The use of flame retardants shall be avoided or minimized (e.g. by the use of an appropriate fabric construction). Flame retardants used for manufacturing of bluesign® approved articles must be manufactured by a bluesign® system partner.” Bluesign Prohibited substances: halogenated biphenyls, terphenyls, and naphthalenes, halogenated diarylalkanes, tris-chlorinated compounds like trichlorophenol and trichlorotoluene, and PBDE (Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers) flame retardants.
Synthetic Versus Natural Materials
Synthetic materials are widely used in outdoor gear because they offer a combination of performance, durability, and versatility that’s hard to match with natural materials. The main pros of using synthetic materials are that they are lightweight, water resistant, and quick drying.
Although natural fibers are not as commonly used in outdoor gear, I have found some options for those looking to avoid synthetic materials. After all, synthetic materials are basically plastic, and plastics are created through chemical processes involving petrochemicals. Natural materials, especially those that are organic, come with more positive environmental impacts and reduced health risks.
In this camping gear roundup, I only included brands that do not use flame retardants, including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) or halogens, on any of their products. I only included products below that do not have intentionally added PFAS chemicals.
