When my daughter was a baby, she had terrible eczema that would bleed and crust over. I tried many creams and ointments, even some that were prescribed by her pediatrician.

I ultimately used one of the natural and non-toxic eczema creams that I recommend below and it worked very well to tame her rash. She is now a teenager, and although her eczema is under control, she does have a few spots that she still has to treat. She is currently using a newer natural and non-toxic eczema treatment (also listed below) and she really loves how it calms her itchiness.

What is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition characterized by inflamed, itchy, and dry skin. Eczema symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may include itchy skin, redness and inflammation,  dry and scaly skin, and/or a rash. Kids and adults with eczema often have sensitive skin that may react to certain triggers or irritants.

What Triggers Eczema?

Although the exact cause of eczema is not fully understood, it is thought to involve a combination of genetic, immune system, and environmental factors. People with a family history of eczema, asthma, or hay fever are more prone to developing the condition.

Eczema symptoms can be aggravated by irritants, including detergents, skincare, certain fabrics and household cleaners. Eczema symptoms can also be triggered by allergens like pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and certain foods. Stress, temperature and humidity as well as dry skin can all worsen eczema symptoms.

Eczema Treatment and Management

Again, I recommend getting diagnosed by a healthcare professional first and putting together a plan with your doctor, dermatologist or allergist. Here are some suggestions for managing eczema symptoms that worked for my daughter.

  • I would first recommend noticing what triggers the eczema and avoiding the known triggers. If wool shirts cause itching, avoid wool textiles, and so on.
  • Apply moisturizer regularly. Moisturizer helps to keep the protective lipids in your skin at a normal level. I have recommendations below for lotions and creams that can be applied everyday.
  • A balm applied to irritated skin will help to prevent water vapor from leaving the skin.  I have recommendations below for balms and treatments that can be applied as needed directly to irritated skin.
  • Before using a new product, patch test on your wrist or behind your ear.
  • Introduce one new product at a time.

What to Avoid If You Have Eczema or Sensitive Skin

  • Don’t overbathe- too much bathing can disrupt your skin’s natural microbiome. Imbalances in the skin microbiome have been associated with various skin conditions, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, and skin infections.
  • Avoid super hot showers and baths.
  • Don’t over-exfoliate

Ingredients to Avoid If You Have Eczema

  • Fragrance
  • Essential Oils
  • Parabens
  • Methoxyisothiazolinone and isothiazolinine (preservatives)
  • Cocamidopropyl betaine
  • Urea
  • Propylene glycol
  • Ethanol
  • Retinoids
  • Lanolin
  • SLS

Beyond steroid cream, there are many non-steroidal creams and balms that can help to reduce inflammation and calm itchiness. I’m sharing my favorite non-toxic skincare for eczema and sensitive skin below.

eczema balms

Treatment Balms & Thicker Creams For Eczema

These balms, thick creams and salves are actually the last line of treatment to apply if you have irritated skin. I’m listing them first because most people assume that you dab on some ointment and you’re on your way. The reality is that you have to examine all of your skincare products and look for irritants. The balms, thick creams and salves below are forms of treatment to minimize water loss from your skin while protecting and fortifying the skin barrier. There are also anti-inflammatory ingredients to help tame inflammation and angry skin.

laundry detergent

Laundry Detergent For Sensitive & Eczema-Prone Skin

Laundry detergent, fabric softeners and dryer sheets can all contribute to skin irritation if they include irritating ingredients like fragrance. The laundry detergent brands below are safe, gentle and fragrance free. I would skip the wool dryer balls if you or your child is allergic to wool.

Certain types of fabric can also irritate sensitive skin. Look for organic cotton sheets and organic crib sheets. Also put your kids to bed in organic cotton PJ’s to stop the itch from synthetic fabric. Brands like Pact and Primary carry lots of high quality organic cotton clothing and more.
