Pact organic cotton clothing and bedding is a healthier, greener option that’s better for you and for the planet. Did you know that cotton is the world’s most heavily sprayed crop? Seven of the 15 pesticides commonly used on cotton in the United States are listed as “probable” or “known” human carcinogens by the Environmental Protection Agency.
- Organic cotton is grown using natural farming processes, without being sprayed with toxic chemicals.
- Organic cotton farming methods use 91% less water than non-organic cotton.
- Organic cotton farming sustains the health of soils, ecosystems, and humans.
What’s Wrong With Non-Organic Clothing?
Non-organic cotton crops are sprayed with chemicals that strip the soil of nutrients. This leads to soil erosion. Fertilizer runoff then pollutes nearby rivers and lakes, causing algal blooms that reduce the oxygen supply and create dead zones in our waterways. This causes our marine ecosystems to suffer and the quality our drinking water supply is greatly diminished.
The use of synthetic fertilizers creates a vicious cycle wherein depleted soil requires more nutrients from fertilizers, and more and more fertilizer needs to be applied every time a crop is planted.
Farm workers also suffer from non-organic cotton farming methods. When pesticides and fertilizers are applied to cotton crops, they endanger the health of farm workers who are exposed to the chemicals through aerial droplets from spraying and direct contact from harvesting and sorting.
