When it comes to dressing your kids, you may not think twice about the materials and fabric that your child’s clothes are made from. Yet many of the clothes your child wears are made from fabrics that are dyed, treated or finished with toxic chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin or even affect long-term health. In this post I’m breaking down how to understand what really matters when it comes to kids clothing and what labels to trust.
The Hidden Harmful Chemicals in Conventional Clothing
You might be surprised to learn that baby & kids clothes can contain:
- Flame retardants
- Formaldehyde (used to make clothes “wrinkle-free”)
- Phthalates and PVC (in prints and logos)
- Azo dyes (some of which can release carcinogenic amines)
- Perfluorinated compounds (PFAS/PFCs) (used for water- and stain-resistance)
- BPA and BPS
Clothing sits directly against our skin all day and night. Because babies and young children have thinner, more absorbent skin, any harmful residues in fabrics can transfer to their skin and potentially be absorbed. Over time, small exposures can add up, especially when clothing is worn daily and against the skin for hours.
Why I Choose Cotton Over Plastic Fabric
Let’s be honest, not all of my clothing or my children’s clothing is organic cotton, and we use synthetic fabrics for athletic activities and outerwear. Here’s something to consider if you wear lots of clothing containing plastic, like nylon and polyesther:
- The American Council on Science & Health found that the laundering of synthetic fabrics releases hundreds of thousands of microplastic fibers per load. That means you’re breathing in miniscule plastic particles whenever you turn on the dryer.
Why Non-Toxic Certifications Matter
Avoiding clothing that’s coated in flame retardants, formaldehyde-based finishes and other toxic chemicals is not that hard to do once you know what to look for.
When shopping for safer children’s clothing, I look for third-party certifications whenever possible. Two of the most trusted are GOTS Certified Organic Cotton and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100.
GOTS Certified Organic Cotton
- Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification is the gold standard for organic fibers. It’s the world’s leading certification for organic fibers, ensuring that textiles are truly organic, environmentally responsible, and socially ethical
- To earn this certification, a product must be made from 95–100% certified organic fibers. The certification prohibits the use of toxic dyes, pesticides, and GMOs, and it bans formaldehyde, flame retardants, PFAS (“forever chemicals”), heavy metals, and azo dyes. This certification does not allow child labor, requires safe working conditions, and limits wastewater discharge.
- Why it matters: The GOTS certification ensures the entire supply chain, from farm to finished fabric, meets strict health, environmental and social criteria. When you see “GOTS Certified Organic Cotton”, you can feel confident that the material is free of harmful residues and is produced ethically.
OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Certified
OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is another important label. This certification means every component of the product (fabric, thread, buttons, zippers, dyes) has been tested for 1,000 harmful substances and found to be safe for human use.
- Some of the harmful chemicals it screens for: Heavy metals, Formaldehyde, Azo dyes, Pesticides, Phthalates, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), PFAS chemicals
- Clothing that’s OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified is considered to be non-toxic and skin-safe, making it an excellent choice for babies and children, especially those with eczema or chemical sensitivities.
Bluesign Partner
- Bluesign is another certification to look for (Patagonia is a Bluesign partner). This certification focuses on a holistic approach to textile production, ensuring that chemical use and resource consumption are minimized throughout the supply chain to protect the environment, workers, and consumers
How to Shop Smarter for Non-Toxic Kids’ Clothes
When browsing for baby and children’s clothing, keep these quick tips in mind:
- Prioritize natural fibers like organic cotton, wool, linen, hemp or Tencel™ over synthetics.
- Check for certification labels like GOTS organic cotton or OEKO-TEX Standard 100 on the tag or product page.
- Wash each item of clothing before first wear to remove residual finishes, no matter what certifications the clothing comes with.
- If you’re on a tight budget, check thrift stores for kids organic clothing- I used to get organic pajamas and more for my kids at really great prices. Just remember to wash before using!
