As a parent, I’ve always wanted the very best for my 2 daughters, and I have fond memories of using California Baby wash at bathtime. In fact, I still recommend it! It’s so important to be mindful of all products you buy for your baby since babies are especially vulnerable to harmful chemicals.
Why Use Non-Toxic Products For Baby
Even small exposures can have a bigger impact since babies have skin that’s thinner and more absorbent, their detox systems aren’t fully mature, and they breathe, eat, and drink more for their size than adults do. Since a baby’s brain, hormones, and organs are rapidly growing, it’s especially important to choose non-toxic products that protect their health during these crucial early years.
Unfortunately, many conventional baby products contain harsh chemicals, undisclosed fragrances, and preservatives that can irritate skin and pose long-term health concerns. Mainstream baby brands like Johnson & Johnson are considered the “gold standard” for newborn care, but research and lawsuits have shown that not all baby products on the shelves are as safe as they seem.
J & J Bedtime Calming moisture wash contains undisclosed fragrance (can have hundreds of ingredients that don’t need to be listed, including hormone disruptors), ethoxylated ingredients (can contain carcinogenic impurities) and Cocamidopropyl betaine (an irritant and allergen). I found similar concerning ingredients in many other popular baby products that are on the shelf and marketed towards babies.
Hidden Toxins in Conventional Baby Products
It can be overwhelming to read labels, but here are a few common culprits you’ll want to avoid when shopping for baby skincare:
- Parabens – Used as preservatives, parabens can disrupt hormones and are linked to endocrine imbalance.
- Phthalates – Often hidden under “fragrance,” this ingredient is tied to developmental issues and reproductive risks.
- Sulfates (SLS/SLES) – Foaming agents that strip natural oils and can cause dryness or irritation.
- Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives – Chemicals like quaternium-15 or DMDM hydantoin that slowly release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.
- Undisclosed fragrances & artificial dyes – These add “baby powder” scents or colors but often trigger allergies, asthma, and skin sensitivities.
- Phenoxyethanol – Sometimes used as a preservative in baby wipes and lotions, it can cause skin and respiratory irritation in infants.
Why Non-Toxic Matters
By swapping out baby products with harmful ingredients for safer alternatives, you reduce the risk of irritation, rashes and exposure to toxins. That’s why choosing non-toxic, organic skincare products isn’t just a trend, it’s peace of mind.
My rule of thumb for baby products: I recommend using only fragrance-free products for babies- that means no fragrance at all, whether it’s essential oils or synthetic fragrance. Essential oils may contain pesticide residue, PFAs chemicals and plasticizers from growing and manufacturing. It is not in the best interest of the baby’s health to be exposed to any extra ingredients, so keep baby safe and avoid scented products altogether.
