With so many body wash products on the market today, it’s hard to know what body wash is best for you. At its simplest, body wash works to cleanse the body of dirt and bacteria, but depending on the ingredients, body wash can also nourish and moisturize your skin and even act as shaving cream.

Conventional body wash, like the kind you buy at the drugstore or big box store, may contain ingredients that have the potential to harm your health if you’re exposed on a daily basis. Since body wash is a product you’re using every day, it’s one of the first swaps I recommend replacing if you’re trying to reduce the number of harmful chemicals that you’re exposed to in your home.

Here’s what I want you to do right now: grab your body wash container and check the ingredients on the back. 

  • The first ingredient to look for is fragrance. What I’m most concerned about is any undisclosed fragrance, since fragrance is an umbrella term that can hide dozens if not hundreds of different chemicals. I’m not saying that all of these chemicals are concerning, but we don’t know if there are any chemicals present that can interfere with your hormone systems and negatively affect your health, so unless a company discloses all of the ingredients and they are not harmful, then avoid that product. Some companies like Attitude have a line of products that use safer synthetics (nature-identical synthetics), so you will see *fragrance, and all of the fragrance ingredients will have an asterisk next to the ingredient. These safer synthetic ingredients are EWG verified and can be made without pesticide residues. 
  • Another ingredient category to avoid is Ethoxylated ingredients, which usually end in “eth”, but can also be indicated by “ethoxylate”, “polysorbate” or PEGs and PPGs.  
  • What is used to preserve the body wash? Here are some preservatives to avoid: phenoxyethanol, parabens, chemicals ending in “isothiazolinone”, chlorphenesin, Japanese honeysuckle and grapefruit seed extract.
  • Does your body wash contain sulfates (SLS/SLES)? Harsh foaming agents like sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate can strip your skin’s natural oils, leaving it dry and irritated.
  • Steer clear of formaldehyde-releasing preservatives such as DMDM hydantoin or quaternium-15, which slowly release small amounts of formaldehyde over time.

The good news is that there are plenty of body washes made with safe, skin-loving ingredients that cleanse effectively while supporting your long-term health and reducing your exposure to unnecessary chemicals.

I’ve screened all the ingredients in the body wash products below, and they all pass my test for containing safer ingredients. Some of the brands use “fragrance”, but I’ve checked with each company to find out more information about the fragrance used. I’ve noted what kinds of fragrance are used (essential oils, natural isolates or safer synthetics), and I also noted if a brand has a sensitive skin option without any fragrance. If acne is a concern, I’ve found 3 products with no pore clogging ingredients.
