After sleeping on the same mattress for 20 years, I was ready for a new mattress. I had suffered some health issues from sleeping on a brand new mattress topper that was not organic, including some scary neurological and breathing issues that disappeared when I threw the mattress topper away.
It was clear to me that purchasing an organic mattress was the best way create a healthier bedroom.
The Issue With A Conventional Mattress
Both conventional mattresses and mattress toppers contain polyurethane foam and/or memory foam. These types of foams off-gas Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), including formaldehyde, benzene and tolulene. VOCs can cause a myriad of health issues, and since we all spend so much time sleeping, exposing yourself to these chemicals night after night is concerning.
Polyurethane and memory foam are highly flammable. To meet the federal flammability standards, petroleum-based foam is doused in flame retardants. Flame retardants are associated with health risks like cancer and endocrine-disruption.
Aside from flame retardants, a conventional mattress contains up to 10 pounds of glue. Between the glue, flame retardants and other chemicals, a mattress will emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, toluene, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), benzene, styrene-butadiene, trichloroethane, and perfluorocarbons, that “off-gas” into the air. EPA research has found that indoor air is 5 times more polluted than outside air, and your mattress could be contributing to the poor air quality in your home.
By replacing a conventional mattress with an organic mattress, you can reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals as you sleep.
Happsy was not actually the first mattress that I tried. I ordered an Avocado mattress and plush topper, but both the mattress and topper were too firm for my taste. Luckily the process of returning the mattress went smoothly.
After doing some research, I ordered a Happsy mattress and have never looked back. I was so happy with my mattress that I ordered a second one for my daughter, and she loves hers too. Below I’ll go over why I love my Happsy mattress. The best part is that Happsy is one of the best budget-friendly organic mattresses around!
Happsy Mattress Materials
Happsy uses natural latex that is certified by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). GOLS certification ensures you’re getting latex with optimal health and performance benefits while protecting the health of our planet, the latex workers and you.
GOTS certified organic cotton fabric and filling are used in Happsy mattresses. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification is the leading standard for organic mattress materials using cotton and wool fabric. The GOTS certification requires that at least 95 percent of the materials in the mattress are certified organic, and it prohibits the use of some chemicals like certain flame retardants, formaldehyde and polyurethane, even in the other 5 percent.
Happsy uses GOTS certified organic wool in their mattresses. Since wool is naturally flame resistant, no added chemical flame retardants are needed to pass flammability standards.
Happsy does not use flame retardants, glues, adhesives, memory foam or polyurethane foam.
Happsy Mattress Certifications
GOTS and GOLS certified (see above).
Happsy mattresses are MADE SAFE® Certified. MADE SAFE® certifies that products are not made with substances that are known or suspected to be harmful. MADE SAFE® certified products are tested for behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, toxic fire retardants, heavy metals, neurotoxins, high-risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents, harmful VOCs, endangered species. MADE SAFE® is a rigorous certification with strict standards.
GREENGUARD Certification– GREENGUARD certification means a mattress has been scientifically tested for approximately 360 common volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through prolonged exposure in environmental chambers. This safety testing standard tests a whole mattress to ensure low levels for harmful VOC’s. GREENGUARD Gold certification signifies that the product has been tested for additional chemicals.
Formaldehyde-Free by UL– UL Solutions validates claims that a product does not contain formaldehyde, or formaldehyde precursors, using a combination of auditing raw material inputs and testing chemical emissions from the product. Qualifying products must also maintain UL GREENGUARD Gold certification to ensure no other harmful chemicals are emitted into indoor air.
Are Happsy Mattresses Manufactured In An Organic Factory?
Happsy mattresses are manufactured in their own certified organic factory which is used exclusively for organic mattress production, so there is no chance of contamination.
From design and development to production and packaging, Happsy organic sleep products are handcrafted by skilled artisans in the U.S.A. Happsy also carries organic mattress toppers. Happsy was founded by Naturepedic to create an affordable non-toxic mattress.
Are Happsy Mattresses Hard To Assemble?
Not at all! The mattress comes folded and wrapped in shrink wrap, so you need to carefully cut through the shrink wrap and unfurl the mattress. The foundation was easy to put together too.
Do Happsy Mattresses Smell?
There is little to no smell when the mattress first arrives. There may have been a faint sweetish smell, but it totally goes away after a few weeks. The foundation smells like untreated fresh wood, and that smell lasts longer- I personally like the smell (I am chemically sensitive), so it is not a big deal to me.
If you get the mattress wet, for example if you sleep with wet hair, the mattress will smell like wet wool, but this smell goes away after a few weeks.
What Are The Benefits Of A Happsy Mattress
Happsy mattresses have a hybrid design that integrates pocket springs designed for proper alignment and lumbar support with latex for contouring and pressure point relief.
Naturepedic is the parent company of Happsy, so you’ll get the expertise that goes into making a high quality organic mattress from the parent company at a lower price point.
My Experience With Sleeping On A Happsy Mattress
We have 2 Happsy Mattresses. Happsy only offers one type of mattress that works well for a wide range of body types and sleeping styles (side sleepers, back sleepers, stomach sleepers).
The first night my daughter slept on her Happsy mattress, she didn’t want to get out of bed in the morning because she was so comfortable. My daughter reports that her mattress is super comfy and has just the right amount of bounce so you don’t sink in too much.
I would describe my Happsy Mattress as medium-firm. I had back surgery last year, and I personally need to use a natural latex topper on my Happsy mattress for the perfect level of softness.
I truly love my Happsy mattress and am totally satisfied by the organic materials and level of comfort. The only con is that if you get the mattress wet, it will smell like wet wool for a few weeks.
