As much as I love sparkly white teeth, most whitening products cause painful sensitivity in my teeth and gums. I’m a habitual coffee and tea drinker, and I try to whiten my teeth about once a year. As a dentist’s daughter, I used bleaching trays during my teenage years, but I moved on to Crest 3D Whitestrips when I moved away from home. Although Crest 3D Whitestrips work really well, I started getting zings of pain in my teeth after using them for a few days. Now that I’m in my 40’s, the sensitivity is getting worse every time I try to use the hydrogen peroxide-based strips.

WHAT’S IN CREST 3D WHITESTRIPS?

The ingredients in Crest 3D Whitestrips are as follows: Water, Glycerin, Hydrogen peroxide, Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) Carbomer 956, Sodium hydroxide, Sodium saccharin, PEG-8, Acrylates copolymer, Polyethylene (the textured strip). The American Dental Association (ADA Council) has deemed Crest 3D Whitestrips safe and effective for at-home teeth whitening, but you may experience increased tooth sensitivity, gum irritation, and nerve pain after using the strips for a few days.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide is the active whitening ingredient. A 2019 study on extracted human teeth found that teeth whitening products can harm the protein-rich tooth layer. The Researchers found that the hydrogen peroxide in whitening strips damages dentin (this may only be temporary).
  • Sodium Hydroxide can cause skin and eye irritation.
  • PEG-8 may be contaminated with 1,4-Dioxane, a potential carcinogen.
  • Acrylates copolymer may be contaminated with skin irritants.

I recently ordered Lumineux Non-Toxic Teeth Whitening Strips in hopes of whitening my teeth without the tooth and gum sensitivity I experience from hydrogen peroxide.

WHAT ARE THE INGREDEINTS IN LUMINEUX NON-TOXIC TEETH WHITENING STRIPS?

Lumineux Non-Toxic Teeth Whitening Strips ingredients: vegetable glycerol, deionized water, carbomer, carboxymethyl, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, dead sea salt (maris sal), salvia officinalis (sage) oil, citrus limon (lemon) peel oil

DID LUNIMEUX NON-TOXIC TEETH WHITENING STRIPS CAUSE SENSITIVITY?

No, not at all. I had zero sensitivity when using the Lumineux Non-Toxic Teeth Whitening Strips.

DID THE NON-TOXIC TEETH WHITENING STRIPS WORK?

Yes, but do not expect your teeth to whiten by more than a few shades. They do not whiten as well as Crest 3D Whitestrips, but they are a gentle whitening option that won’t cause tooth and gum sensitivity. For the most part, the Lumineux Non-Toxic Teeth Whitening Strips also stayed on my teeth. I experienced a little slippage of the strips on my bottom teeth, but the strip was easy to put back in place. As far as the taste, I found the strips to have a mild lemon and sage flavor, which I didn’t mind at all.

Before and After Using Lumineux Non-Toxic Whitening Strips

DO I RECOMMEND LUMINEUX NON-TOXIC WHITENING STRIPS?

Yes, absolutely! If you suffer from sensitive teeth and gums, Lumineux Non-Toxic Teeth Whitening Strips are the way to go. Your teeth won’t be blindingly white, but they will whiten up a few shades. If you’re looking for drastic results, visit your dentist.

WHY DO I HAVE WHITE SPOTS ON MY TEETH?

Typically, white spots on the teeth are caused by one of these factors:

  1. Fluorosis- The white spots on my teeth fit under the category of fluorosis (most likely caused by my dad the dentist’s over-eager fluoride treatments). Fluorosis occurs when a child ingests large amounts of fluoride while their teeth are still developing. Too much fluoride (from fluoride toothpaste, treated water or supplements) can cause enamel discoloration that looks chalky white.
  2. Enamel Hypoplasia- Enamel hypoplasia can cause teeth to develop spots that appear milky white, yellow or brown. This occurs due to high fevers, nutritional deficiencies or side effects from medicine, as well as smoking when pregnant and being born prematurely.
  3. Demineralization- When oral bacteria accumulate on your teeth, they release acids that lead to demineralization of the tooth enamel, causing chalky white spots. This is most often caused by improper brushing, and is common among those who have braces.

As I mentioned earlier, I developed permanent white spots on my teeth during childhood, but they are less noticeable as time goes by. Every time I whiten my teeth, the spots on my teeth get whiter. However, a few days after I stop the whitening process, the spots are way less noticeable.

On the Lumineux Non-Toxic Teeth Whitening Strips information handout, there is a disclaimer about white spots: “Sometimes people have white spots after using the strips. These are completely temporary and are not a sign of damage. It’s simply because your teeth didn’t have hydration for that time you had the strips on. They should be gone within 24 hours and in their wake will be overall whiter teeth.”

HOW TO AVOID TEETH STAINING FROM COFFEE & RED WINE

  • Brush and floss your teeth about an hour before you plan to start sipping. Stains darken the film of plaque on your teeth, so brushing and flossing beforehand to remove plaque will help minimize stains.
  • When you’ve finished your drink, rinse your mouth with water. Prevent coffee or red wine from hanging out on your teeth by swishing water in your mouth.
  • Don’t brush your teeth right away! Wait at least 30 minutes after you’ve consumed your beverage before brushing your teeth. The acid in red wine and coffee work with your toothbrush to cause abrasion of your enamel, and can inadvertently leave your teeth susceptible to long-term damage.
  • Brush with a nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste like Boka Ela Mint Toothpaste daily, and don’t rinse after brushing. Nano-hydroxyapatite works to fill in the microfissures in your tooth enamel. One of the benefits of using hydroxyapatite toothpaste (I’ve noticed this firsthand) is that the tooth surface appears white and glossy.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for cleanings!
